The Story of Philosophy
The Jar of Life
...................................
EDİTÖR YAYINEVİ
There was a philosophy teacher. One day, he brought a big glass jar to the classroom.
He started to fill up the jar with big rocks. When they reached the rim of the jar, he held
it up to the students and asked them if the jar was full. They all agreed that there was no
space to put more rocks in it. It was full.
Then, he picked up a tub of small pebbles and poured these in the jar so that they
filled the space around the big rocks. He asked, “Is the jar full now?” The students all looked
at each other and agreed that the jar was completely full now. Then the teacher picked up an
other container. This time he had sand in it. He poured the sand in between the pebbles and
the rocks and once again he held up the jar to the class and asked if it was full.
“Are you sure it’s full?” he asked. He finally picked up a bottle of water and tripped
the water into the jar until it filled up all the remaining space. The students laughed.
The jar represents your life. The rocks are important things that have real value
- your family, your partner, your health, etc. The pebbles are small stuff that you fill the
other things such as your job, house, car, etc. The sand is everything else. If you fill the jar
with sand, you won’t have any space for rocks and pebbles. If you never have a room for
important things. Take care of the rocks first. Set your priorities. The rest is just sands.
