Epic of Köroğlu

Koca Yusuf was a poor man who worked in the horse stables of the powerful Bey of
Bolu. One day, Koca Yusuf saw a young horse. This horse didn't look like anything special, but
Koca Yusuf knew horses, and he could see that if he took care of the horse well, this would be

a really great horse. Koca Yusuf showed the young horse to the Bey of Bolu. He told the Bey

that this horse would make a wonderful present for the Sultan. But the Bey of Bolu just saw
a skinny, no-good looking horse. He thought Koca Yusuf was making fun of him. The angry
Bey of Bolu blinded Koca Yusuf. Koca Yusuf took his son and the horse and then he went
away. His son's name was Ruşen Ali, but now people started to call him "Köroğlu", the meaning

"Son of the Blind Man." Years later, Ruşen Ali grew up and became a strong and brave young
man. The horse also grew up strong and fast and really special. When Koca Yusuf died, he told
his son to avenge him against the Bey of Bolu. Köroğlu had no army, but lots of young men

joined him. Köroğlu and his men began fighting with the Bey of Bolu. Finally, Köroğlu defeated
the Bey and took his father's revenge.
