EXPRESSING OBLIGATION
MUST

* “must” yapısı, zorunlulukları ifade ederken kullandığımız yapılardan birisidir. Kişisel zorunlulukları
bildirir ve Türkçe karşılığı “-meli / -malı” ekidir. “must” yapısı bütün öznelerle değişmeden kul-
lanılır ve fiil yalın hâldedir.

œ Examples:
y We must save water and energy. (Suyu ve enerjiyi idareli kullanmalıyız.)
y You must stop destroying forests. (Ormanları tahrip etmeyi bırakmalıyız.)
y People must recycle waste materials. (İnsanlar atık materyalleri geri dönüştürmeliler.)

* Zorunlulukları ifade ederken kullandığımız “must” yapısının olumsuz hali “must not (mustn’t)”
şeklindedir ve yasakları bildirmek için kullanılır.

œ Examples:
y We mustn’t pollute the air, seas and land. (Havayı, denizleri ve toprağı kirletmemeliyiz.)
y You mustn’t hunt animals for their fur. (Hayvanları kürkleri için avlamamalısınız.)
y We mustn’t pour our waste into the water sources. (Su kaynaklarının içerisine atıklarımızı dök-
memeliyiz.)

EXERCISE - 1

y Read the sentences and fill in the blanks with “must” or “mustn’t”.
1. We use their own cars a lot to keep the air clean.
