Republic Day
Republic Day is an official holiday in Turkey. It marks the creation of Turkish Republic on

29 October, 1923. Many people go to stadiums to watch performances on this day. These
performances usually include of theatre sketches, poetry reading and traditional Turkish
dances.

National Sovereignty and Children’s Day

This festival is celebrated on the 23 of April. The great leader, Atatürk presented this
day to children. During this festival, children from different countries come to Turkey and
they stay at Turkish people’s houses. They wear their traditional clothes and perform their
traditional dances. During the celebrations, children walk in parades and sing songs. Students
decorate their classrooms and also their schools with flags and balloons.
Youth and Sports Day
Atatürk arrived in Samsun on May 19, 1919. This date is accepted as the starting date of
Turkish War of Independence. Atatürk declared this day to be Youth and Sports Day and
made it an official holiday in 1938.
